Certification
Substitute teachers in Missouri must have a Substitute Teaching Certificate issued by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Individuals with 60 semester hours of college credit may acquire a Substitute Teacher's Certificate. The application for a Substitute Teacher Certificate and a college transcript must be submitted online at the DESE website. An information packet is available at the Central Office with directions for the online process.
Individuals who have a valid teaching certificate may substitute in any Missouri school district as long as they have a valid Substitute Certificate as well. A copy of your teaching certificate and a college transcript must be turned in to the Central Office.
Retired teachers are limited to 550 hours substitute teaching annually without affecting their retirement benefits. It is the responsibility of the retired teacher to keep records on the number of hours they have worked.
